"Patient rights
Under HIPAA, patients have the following rights:
To access, copy and inspect their own health information;
To request an amendment or correction to existing information;
To collect an accounting of certain disclosures;
To request restrictions on disclosures for treatment and/or payment of health care;
To request alternative communications methods; and
To complain about violations and/or a covered entity's own policies."
The Privacy Rule requires covered entities to distribute a Notice of Privacy Practices (NPP) to appropriate persons. This notice must explain that patient, written permission is required before the use or disclosure of Protected Health Information.
The Final Rule (described on previous page) additionally requires this notification to
To comply with the Final rule, a notice of privacy practices must be posted onto a covered entity's website if one exists. If not, then the covered entity must provide its notice of privacy practices via postal mail within 60 days of any revisions.[1]

- fully explain a patient's ability to restrict disclosures
- fully explain the types of uses and disclosures that require authorization
- fully explain a patient's right to opt out of some disclosures
- fully explain a patient's right to receive a notice in the event of a breach
- fully explain a patient's rights in regards to the use of their genetic information
